Uncle Jimmy (single)

by The Successful Failures

/

about

"Uncle Jimmy" is a song that dates back at least to the 2017 "Ichor of Nettle" era for The Successful Failures. There is a stripped down version that appeared on a BlowUp Radio compilation with Mick on piano and Pete on guitar, but the band kept coming back to it with different strategies. So here we are in 2022 finally releasing it as a single. The ultimate strategy was to keep it simple and think WWJFD (What Would John Fogerty Do) and that's what we did. The song tells the story of my memories of a real life uncle...many of the details turned out to be wrong but I did my best to capture my memories as a kid of this strange man...it was the missing fingers. I couldn't keep my eyes off of them! But my uncle seemed to me, even at that young age, as maybe a flawed person. And as I get older myself I realize we all are flawed in our own ways. And who knows if there is a God capable of dishing out mercy but we can certainly show some more to each other. Cheers to you Uncle Jimmy.

lyrics

Uncle Jimmy was a Phillies fan
I don't know how he came to root for them
The red-capped missing fingered man
Took my dad to Veteran's Stadium

Oh Lord, show a little mercy to Jim
Oh Lord, show a little mercy to him

Mike Schmidt was maybe 21
Uncle Jimmy said, "That guys a bum!"
He took it back in '80, '81
The year they finally won

Oh Lord, show a little mercy to Jim
Oh Lord, show a little mercy to him

Uncle Jimmy smelled like cigarettes
About as skinny as a man can get
He lost those fingers in the machinery
In 1963

Oh Lord, show a little mercy to Jim
Oh Lord, show a little mercy to him

Crew cut, missing finger
He could-a-been a country singer
He looked like George Jones
At least to me he did!

Uncle Jimmy stopped by the house
Stood on the lawn and he looked about
I don't recall him ever coming in
But I was just a kid back then

Oh Lord, show a little mercy to Jim
Oh Lord, show a little mercy to him

The Successful Failures Trenton, New Jersey

"The first thing you should know about The Successful Failures is that any attempt to plug them into one genre or another is very much a fool’s errand. Hailing from Trenton, N.J., the band deftly combines Americana, Pop, Rock, and enough of a dusting of Bluegrass that serves as an appetizer to the main course without overwhelming the entire meal." - July 2020, Rock is the New Roll ... more
