about

JERSEY BEAT 77 SUCCESSFUL FAILURES (Face Down Records) Originally a side project for the Dipsomaniacs’ (and FDR label owner) Mick Chorba, the Successful Failures eventually took on a life of their own and the result is this delight dozen-track CD of concise, catchy power-pop, redolent with hooks, wit, and big trebley guitars. From the self-deprecating loser-in-love lament “Letting The Terrorists Win” to the band’s theme song, “Successful Failures” to the twangy alt-country “Hick Bars,” this eponymous debut crackles with a hearty sense of humor, an abundant command of melody, and clever, biting lyrics. For fans of Bastards of Melody, Billionaire Boys Club, Fountains of Wayne, and yes, the Replacements. – Jim Testa
