For you vinyl lovers out there - Saratoga on beautiful black 12" vinyl with a varied song sequence to better suit the "Side A" / "Side B" format.

The album jacket, designed by FDR graphics guru Mike Virok, includes the David Appel photo of the band in the studio on the back and the Tris McCall photo of urban NJ on the cover. It's such a pleasure to see this design in a 12 x 12 format rather than the tiny compact disc - but the real allure here is the beautiful sound of this album on the vinyl. Also included in this order is the 11 x 11 insert / lyric sheet and the SF Beer Tour sticker (designed by freelance artist Jason Kochis).

Because we’re ghosts Because we’re pilots Because we’re lighter than the wind No one will find us Because we’re ghosts Because we’re pirates Because we sail into the wind That blows behind us Because we’re ghosts Because we’re ghosts Because we’re numbers Because we gave all that we had Unto each other Because we’re ghosts Because we’re Godless Because we only have the truth Wherefor to guide us Because we’re ghosts
2.
Love You So 03:02
Why don’t we drink until we’ve had our fill? Why don’t we sleep until we’re tired? Why do we think we have this time to kill? Why do we fall into the briar? Why don’t we wake up when the day is new? And keep our heads under the covers? How do we break out of this portmanteau? And keep our arms around each other? I love you so, I love you so I love you so, I want to know Do you love me so? Why don’t we stay in this garden grove? Why don’t we sleep until December? Why don’t we pray for these days to grow? Into nights we spend together I love you so, I love you so I love you so, I want to know Do you love me so?
3.
I fell right through the floor and onto the stage Everything was different but it smelled the same It’s been 13 years since I left this place alive I took my dreams and I got out just in time But I wonder where you got to I wonder where you are I came back to find you Between the ocean and the stars Blackjack Betty, craps, and Caribbean stud I got to the bottom of it all and I never got up I ran like hell I went anyway the wind blows But you can’t outrun the ghosts that haunt you On a deer path through the woods I lived my life I didn’t think once, let alone think twice But the thorns and the thistle and the briar and the thatch all grew Up around my legs and I never got through I dug a whole as deep as a mountain is wide I closed my lips and I never opened my mind I tumbled like the dice that roll across your table The world goes by I just watch from the window
4.
Oh dear Mother, here comes another Oh dear Mother, another child of the sea Oh dear Mother, here comes another Oh dear Mother, another child for to feed In the morning children napping Mother lies awake and listens to the water lapping Oh dear Mother, here comes another Oh dear Mother, another child on your knee Oh dear Mother, here comes another Oh dear Mother, another wanton refugee And the day turns into evening Another ray of light fall through the broken ocean ceiling There is no better time There is no better time to tell you What were we waiting for THere is no better time There is not better time to tell you We’re giving back the awards We’re giving back the gold stars We’re giving back the congratulations What did we want it for We’re giving back the awards We’re giving back the congratulations What did we want it for? I have no dice to take my chances I have no light to guide my way I could be right and still be senseless Put up a fight and still be senseless I can’t be here in this world Without you here in this world
5.
Oh my my I’ve been living a lie Don’t know what the truth is Oh my my I spent so much time Living in this state of mind When just around the corner from me Is a fresh food market Just around the corner from me Is a Taco Bell But there’s no white knight in Knoxville No white knight on my street No white knight in Knoxville Nobody here but me Oh my my the Tennessee valley On a Friday Oh my my out on Riverside Drive On a Saturday night When just around the corner from me Is a fresh food market Just around the corner from me Is a Taco Bell But there’s no white knight in Knoxville No white knight on my street No white knight in Knoxville Nobody here but me
6.
I can’t keep myself from the anger My employment place full of rancor We sit here like disgruntled bankers Pulled down like we got weighted anchors Attached to our legs Stuck like pegs In pegboard partitions I just passed my car inspection Me new auspicious direction No flu no viral inspection The day is new and it feels like perfection New moonshine, rock steady All wracked up but never ready I rely on you, I never lied to you, I rely on you, You can rely on me too I can’t keep myself from the feeling Or keep the room from its reeling I hold on to you for my balance I’m like the kid who spent his allowance On baseball cards and gum I’m just as dumb, as I was When I was young I just buried my gut reaction I married my dissatisfaction No service no reception Just me and my new deception No honeymoon, no travel The door slams shut just like a gavel I rely on you, I never lied to you, I rely on you, You can rely on me too I dropped just like a Catholic The envelope into the basket I rise up like a spirit Am I the only one here who feels it And I don’t know what’s wrong It’s just a song that went on for too long
7.
Ruby Ruby 03:40
Oh Ruby Ruby, please don’t dry Make me a pillow on your palette tonight Oh oh Ruby Oh Ruby Ruby, I lost my way I left my body on that cold sad day Oh oh Ruby Oh Ruby I, I’m coming home To you tonight, I’m coming home Oh Ruby Ruby, I’ll march no more They’ll be no medal for me from this war Oh oh Ruby Oh Ruby Ruby, the Captain said Tie him up until he’s good and dead Oh oh Ruby Oh Ruby I, I’m coming home To you tonight, I’ll come marching home Oh Ruby Ruby, listen for the sound Of my footsteps coming into town Oh oh Ruby Oh Ruby Ruby, I hope to find You waiting for me in the cold dark night Oh oh Ruby
8.
Oh Diane 03:03
Oh Diane, we could build a fire with these pine cones To keep us warm when it gets cold Oh Diane, there was a lawyer down in Washington Who found a way for me to go Here I am, you don’t see Here I am, you don’t see You don’t see me, you don’t see me Diane Oh Diane, there was a mountain made of money The ashes fell down just like snow Oh Diane, I severed all relations I burn a bridge everywhere I go Here I am, you don’t see Here I am, you don’t see You don’t see me, you don’t see me Diane And from the ashes we’ll rise So open your eyes Try me one more time, Diane
9.
The tower is under the sun Carry me up when you’re done Giving a hundred and one Nicotine patches The celery salt The foregone conclusions The San Andreas fault The planet’s already been spun So get off your haunches and run A hundred and one has begun The snake through the lattice The mulberry tree The tidepool reflections The swift and shaky knees Already in tune, already to ruin All ready, All ready Already to prove, already to lose Already, all ready in two The actor is ready to spin Into his bottle of gin A hundred and one will begin The Japanese flowers Already in bloom The convincing cases The American typhoon Already in tune, already to ruin All ready, All ready Already to prove, already to lose Already, all ready in two
10.
Everywhere she goes it’s raining Everywhere she goes it’s coming down Na na na na, na na na na na na Somebody tell me how Na na na na, na na na na na na I can’t figure it out Sometimes she pulls me up Sometimes I pull her under Everywhere she goes it’s raining Everywhere she goes she’s waiting around Na na na na, na na na na na na Somebody tell me how Na na na na, na na na na na na I can’t figure it out Sometimes she pulls me up Sometimes I pull her under Everywhere we go we bring our own parlour Everywhere we go we bring our own pain I love you like no other, so I can’t complain
11.
Where were you when they put me out with the garbage Where were you when they put me out on the curb Where were you when they kicked me out of the kitchen For putting too much butter in my curds Where were you when they married me to that doctor without a heart In other words, in other words, where were you? Where were you when they put me up in that backroom Where were you when they hired those security guards Where were you when they put me up in that tower With noone there to talk to put the stars Where were you when they told me not to remember who you are I other words, in other words, where were you? Where were you when they told me about contrition Where were you when they put me in the back of that car Where were you when told me not to stay here And not to put my elbows on the bar Where were you when they turned the lights off And said it wasn’t dark In other words, in other words, where were you? Where were you when they burned up all my magazines Where were you when they tied me to that rail Where were you when they told me not to worry And that the constitution was for sale Where were you when they held me with no chance to post my bail In other words, in other words, where were you?

about

NJ Indie-Rock/Roots band the Successful Failures 7th full length LP, "Saratoga", features 11 new Mick Chorba tunes all about ghosts, mothers, gold stars, and Knoxville. Songs about going back to learn you can never go back. Rock and roll.

if you Google "how to be a successful independent musician" you will likely find the answer is to invest your time into social media promotion. Hours per day. Posting. Posting. And more posting. This NJ band decided to eschew this advice and instead invested their time rehearsing. The 2nd step was to convene in a large studio in Red Bank, NJ with instruments such as guitars and drums. While in this room the band spent several days making some noise, making some music - this recording, titled "Saratoga" is the results. Enjoy.

about

The Successful Failures Trenton, New Jersey

"The first thing you should know about The Successful Failures is that any attempt to plug them into one genre or another is very much a fool’s errand. Hailing from Trenton, N.J., the band deftly combines Americana, Pop, Rock, and enough of a dusting of Bluegrass that serves as an appetizer to the main course without overwhelming the entire meal." - July 2020, Rock is the New Roll ... more
